North Dakota Soybean Processors New Soybean Processing Facility

North Dakota Soybean Processors (NDSP) built a new greenfield soybean processing facility in Casselton, North Dakota to produce food-grade soybean oil. As NDSP’s long-standing and trusted engineering partner, KFI was chosen to lead the project.

Location

Casselton, ND

Industry

Lipids, Oils & Animal Feed

Services Provided

Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Utility Generation & Distribution

Challenge

NDSP connects soybean producers with end users through the production of high-quality food and fuel products. Their goal was to create additional value by processing soybeans in the upper Midwest, rather than exporting them for further processing. To accomplish this, NDSP needed to increase soybean processing capacity in North Dakota by building a new greenfield soybean processing facility and vegetable oil refinery.

Approach

KFI lead the project team and drove the project schedule while prioritizing the budget and project goals. In addition to leading the project engineering team, KFI performed the following services:

  • Site plan
  • General arrangements
  • P&ID’s
  • Process and utility piping design
  • 3D modeling
  • Equipment procurement services
  • Utility systems
  • Material handling systems
  • Hexane unload/storage and handling systems
  • Tank farm design
  • Preparation, extraction, and refinery processes
  • Facility wide HVAC and plumbing system design

Outcome

The new soybean processing facility allows farmers to deliver soybeans and pick up soybean meal to feed their livestock, connecting the producers with the end users. Because of high demand for soybeans, the value has increased, leading to higher profits for local producers. KFI helped achieve NDSP’s goals by designing a facility that was delivered under budget and on schedule.

The facility includes a 3,750 metric-tons-per-day soybean processing facility and an 800 short ton-per-day refined, bleached, and deodorized (RBD) vegetable oil refinery. NDSP now has crushing capacity to process two thirds of the state’s soybean crop, adding increased value to an agriculture-driven economy.
