The University of Notre Dame South Bend Hydro Project has been selected as a 2024 POWER Top Plant award winner by Power Magazine. KFI is proud to have been part of this exciting project.
Featuring one of the most unique underground structures in the region, this 2.5 MW hydroelectric facility on the downtown South Bend dam of the St. Joseph River was funded by the University of Notre Dame as a part of its renewable energy portfolio.
The project has a 50’ deep excavation adjacent to a run-of-river dam that is completely covered. A new city park was developed by the City of South Bend on top of a drivable structure provided in KFI’s design.
Approximately two miles of medium-voltage cabling connects this project to the University of Notre Dame campus’ electrical grid. Routing was done jointly with a new utility route and included numerous crossings of roads and waterways, pull boxes, directional boring, open-cut excavation, and vaults for switching.
