In 2010, Notre Dame developed their Utilities Long-Range Plan, with the goal of 50% reduction in carbon emissions on a square-foot basis by 2030. Doug Marsh, Vice President for Facilities Design and Operations and University Architect noted that sustainability innovation is part of the fabric of the University.
“That’s part of our mission,” he said. “…to lead, to show by example that we can overcome some of these hurdles and make a difference in the saving of the planet.”
By 2020, the University had already reached their 2030 goal, which inspired staff to be more aggressive in their sustainability initiatives. Paul Kempf, Assistant Vice President of Utilities and Maintenance said
“We want to invest in quality projects that have quality results over a long period of time and that’s the best payback for us because we’re going to be here. You’re investing in the future.”
