High Plains Processing Multi-Seed Switch Plant

South Dakota Soybean Processors (SDSP) approached KFI with a vision to construct a greenfield oilseed processing facility near Mitchell to bolster South Dakota’s agribusiness economy. SDSP partnered with investors to create High Plains Processing, a multi-seed switch plant to process both sunflower seeds and soybeans.

Challenge

Designing operations for a switch plant added layers of complexity to the project, including integrating multiple process technologies. The owner’s vision required an engineering partner with deep experience in oilseed processing facilities and the ability to manage complex large-scale projects.

Approach

KFI’s ability to drive engineering schedules and manage large-scale projects in the field paved the way for success. The project was being constructed while detailed engineering was being completed. The ability to build and adapt the engineering schedule to fit construction requirements was crucial to achieving project goals.

KFI provided total project management, delivering mechanical, process, structural, electrical, and instrumentation engineering design, including all 3D modeling and piping, while also managing the architectural and civil engineering aspects of the project. KFI generated equipment and instrument bid packages to assist the owner in procuring over $80 million of equipment for the project. The collaborative effort between KFI, SDSP, and all the contractors was pivotal to the successful execution of this project.

Outcome

High Plains Processing has bolstered South Dakota’s agribusiness economy and employs approximately 85 people, serving as a vital asset to the community and its farmers.

With the ability to process soybeans or sunflowers, the crush plant consists of a 3,000 ton per day (TPD) cold dehulling soybean plant and 2,400 TPD sunflower press plant capable of producing 788,000 tons of soybean meal and 500,000 tons of sunflower meal pellets annually. All crude vegetable oil is processed to high value, food-grade quality in the facility’s 1,000 TPD refinery. The site also includes three million bushels of grain storage, 1,500 tons of meal storage, two grain dryers, 11.3 million gallons of combined crude and salad oil storage, local administration offices, maintenance facility, laboratory, and central energy plant.
