To accommodate the increase in HVAC capacity needed by the Electrophysiology (EP) labs in a cost-effective way, the HVAC system of the adjacent Joint and Spine Center was cleverly extended over to the Courtyard Building to serve this project. As part of this effort, the smoke control system serving the Joint and Spine Center was extended over to the Courtyard Building, and a new smoke control zone was created. KFI carefully coordinated the extension of the smoke control system with the City of Cincinnati Department of Buildings and Inspections before issuing the design documents. All EP rooms incorporated LED lighting, isolated power panels, and laminar flow diffusers. A new medical gas system was installed to serve the entire space. This system utilized vertical medical gas valve boxes to reduce wall space taken up by the assemblies, digital alarm panels, and expandable headwalls. Customized lighting controllers were provided in all EP rooms and prep and recovery rooms.

The renovation was performed in three phases, since the majority of the square footage needed to be left in service at any given time. The HVAC utilized four existing air handler systems and required areas to stay in service on the same duct mains, while other areas were renovated. This involved careful planning for demolition and temporary measures. The commissioning was performed in three phases. The Owner required immediate occupancy upon completion of each space, so the commissioning needed to be carried out quickly and accurately to assure that the spaces were ready.
