The Northern Metal Recycling New Shredder Site, led by SEH, received an ACEC Grand Award.
KFI Engineers provided electrical design engineering services for the new recycling facility in Becker, MN. It included 13 new buildings, roads, parking, access points, concrete storage, rail tracks, and stormwater ponds. Xcel Energy brought 34.5 kV feeder to the site and KFI designed the 34.5 kV distribution system consisting of the 38 kV outdoor switchgear and a looped underground distribution to pad-mounted distribution transformers to provide power to various buildings on the site. It also had a 38 kV radial feeder to feed a 18 MVA step-down transformer that fed an 8000 hp shredder motor at 4160V. We also provided lighting, power, instrumentation and control design, and grounding for the process buildings, which included the Ferrous and Shredder Buildings, MRP Building, and Emissions Building. Site lighting design was also included for the parking lots on site.
KFI also provided process air and water to the shredder machines, and building ventilation for the majority of the buildings.
